What Are Manufacturer-Specific Codes?

Some diagnostic trouble codes are common to all brands (generic), while others are manufacturer-specific. This article explains what manufacturer-specific codes are and why they must be interpreted per brand.

Generic vs manufacturer-specific codes

In a DTC, the second character indicates the code type: “0” usually denotes a generic (SAE) code, while “1” denotes a manufacturer-specific code. For example, P0xxx is generic and P1xxx is manufacturer-specific.

Code families: P, C, B, U

P (powertrain) relates to engine and transmission, C (chassis) to brakes and suspension, B (body) to body electronics, and U (network) to in-vehicle communication. Their manufacturer-specific variants (P1, C1, B1, U1) are correctly interpreted only with the relevant brand’s documentation.

How the app handles this

After reading the raw fault code, the app maps it to a brand-specific explanation when possible. If no match is found, it does not fabricate an explanation; it shows the raw code and a “no explanation found” note.
